Do As You Want Them To Do
Do as I say, not as I do. A phrase many of us parents find ourselves uttering. A phrase we know has no shot of ever really working if we ourselves are not walking the walk instead of just talking the talk..
Kids will learn from your example and from the example of those closest to them and with whom they spend the most time. So what you do is what they learn.
Like cellphone usage.
My thirteen year old daughter got a used cellphone with limited calls as her birthday present. It was actually a combined bribe plus birthday present. The bribe part was for her agreeing to have her younger sister move into her room, while her younger brother got his own room. She is also the last of her friends to not have a cellphone. Parental peer pressure maybe??
Anyways back to my point. My daughter has her two older brothers plus her parents and friends as her cellphone use role models.
She may be in trouble. None of the above have a healthy cellphone use balance in their lives.
Sure enough on her birthday, the first day with her phone, she made me completely nuts with her obsession. Okay, she was excited and it was her first day with her phone, but I was already having nightmares of her following in her family’s and country’s cellphone use obsession.
So she got her fair share of the “what is proper with cellphones”,” you better not make me nuts with your cellphone” type talks. But I wasn’t that great either. I picked up calls in public places. I made phone calls all through the day.
Though I do have to say that since putting up last week’s prompt, I was a lot more aware of where and when I was talking and the possible impact of my actions. If I want my daughter to be a courteous cellphone user, I am going to do a heck of a lot better being courteous myself.
Because kids do as you do, not as you say. And if you work hard you may even get to the point where what you say and what you do is the same.
So how did you guys all do with this week’s Kindness Club Week 7 prompt of being a courteous cellphone user?
Go on and write a post about your experiences. (Don’t forget to use the URL from your post not your site). The link will be open for a week. (Sunday-Sunday)
Make sure to come back on Tuesday for this week’s Kindness Club Prompt.
Can’t wait to hear your stories.

I like to think I’m courteous but I do get excited when I get a call / text because it doesn’t happen often!
My phone doesnt really come out of my bag very often and neaither does Maddad’s. Mainly as I can not text for the life of me, plus, I would rather use the home phone. I am a great believer though in behaviour breeds behaviour and setting a good example to the boys
Lol,I hardly use mine wherever my husband is practically glued to his iPhone, which he also uses to persecute me by taking pictures of me every minute of the day.
I’m however glued to my beloved Mac, although as a writer, I suppose that’s kind of allowed .
My kids love using computers and I’m always amazed how quickly they pick it up.
I do try to set a good example, it is true your children will do as you do.
Mostly I am myself though, there’s no point pretending to be something you are not.
I have to say I am glued to my blackberry — I know, bad example! =( However, my boys don’t really have an interest in using the phone but that could jsut be a boy thing too, right?
Congratulations to your big girl! It’s scary having a teenage girl isn’t it! I’ll try and get a post up about do unto others etc. Though I can pretty much tell you now it won’t be about cellphones. I’m terrible!
