Don’t Leave Someone With OCD Alone In Your House

Don’t Leave Someone With OCD Alone In Your House

I should actually amend that title. Don’t leave someone with OCD alone in your house unless you don’t want to find anything. It been about a month now of Jewish holidays. (Translation for those who are not Jewish: A month of food shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, ironing, going to synagogue, eating, eating some more, cooking some more…) In any event this last holiday of Succot my parents have been here visiting from overseas. My grandmother who … Read entire article »

Sometimes The Right Thing, Is To Think About Yourself First

Sometimes The Right Thing, Is To Think About Yourself First

We spend our lives doing things for others. If we put ourselves and our needs first, we seem to be programmed to feel guilty or badly about it, especially in regard to our family. There are times though when we need to put ourselves first. A mother who is at the verge of breaking down is no good to anyone if she doesn’t take some time for herself and her needs. A person who doesn’t learn to say … Read entire article »

The Unknown Is What Causes Unease

The Unknown Is What Causes Unease

I have been thinking a lot in recent weeks about death. (Don’t worry, not mine.) What I am coming to realize is that the thing that causes people the most unease and anxiety is the unknown. If you think about times you have been worried and nervous, there was probably a component of unknown in the equation. If you don’t know something for certain your mind takes you to many different scenarios and leaves you with … Read entire article »

Sometimes The Only Thing You Can Do Is To Be Present

Sometimes The Only Thing You Can Do Is To Be Present

It’s not easy when people we care about are suffering. It’s not easy watching them go through trials or heartbreak. There are times when you are lucky and can offer something useful. Being a nurse I am lucky (yes, odd word to use) in that way when the suffering involves medical issues.I guess it is lucky because I at times feel as if I can actually contribute something to the situation instead of feeling helpless. There are … Read entire article »

If Your Memory Is Less Then Perfect, Write Down Events You Want To Remember

If Your Memory Is Less Then Perfect, Write Down Events You Want To Remember

I still don’t know who stole my memory, but I wish they would give it back. I like to remember when I have things cooking on the stove and I like to remember events like birthdays whether it be family, friends or friends’ kids. I also like to remember to ask how people are doing after procedures, after they have been sick and stuff like that. I think it is important. It is a way of … Read entire article »

There Are Times When Procrastination Pays Off

There Are Times When Procrastination Pays Off

I am either a neat freak or a slob. I don’t know why but I have a hard time adjusting to the “middle” ground. Over the years I have slowly  been trying to learning to do so, a bit reluctantly I might. I just have way to much going on in my life to be the neat perfectionist I would prefer to be, so I grudgingly try to aim for the middle ground instead of a … Read entire article »

Anger Is A Good Teacher, If You Listen

Anger Is A Good Teacher, If You Listen

Emotions are our way of expressing ourselves. They are a kind of thermometer for our soul. The stronger the emotion, the more we can learn about ourselves. Anger is a tricky emotion. Why? Because it is generally the emotion that is blamed on someone else. You are angry because someone or something “made you angry”. I used to believe that. I am sure that anyone allergic to psychobabble (as my husband calls it) has long disappeared. So for those left … Read entire article »

Hugs Can Convey More Than Words

Hugs Can Convey More Than Words

Hugs are wonderful. I think they are even better than words for conveying emotions.  So what is it about hugs that are so great? I think that one of our primal needs is the need for touch. Touch can be as simple as a pat on the back or a casual hug. It is what connects us to other people. Hugs give us the “touch” and so much more, because a hug can convey so many … Read entire article »

True Humilty Means Knowing Your Own Self Worth

True Humilty Means Knowing Your Own Self Worth

The concept of humility is one that I have been struggling with. I think that most people would agree that humility is trait we should all aspire to. The problem is that I don’t think most people really know or agree on the definition of true humility. Does humility mean that when you get a compliment about your talents you shrug it off saying “no big deal” ? When you are praised for doing a good … Read entire article »

Teach By Example

Teach By Example

I know that every parent hopes and prays that their child will do better then they did, whether it is financially, physically but most of all emotionally. Who doesn’t want their child to be happier then they are, even if they themselves are insanely happy? We try to tell lead our children to make decisions we believe are the best ones for them. We often plead with them to do or not do things they are … Read entire article »

Make Your Luggage Stand Out, Or You May Never Find It

Make Your Luggage Stand Out, Or You May Never Find It

This is another in my recent black humor series of posts. (Hopefully lots of good things and happiness are headed my way to end this streak.) Actually the topic itself is not the black humor part, rather just the way the topic was suggested to me. My friend who lost her father this week is sitting Shiva. For those unfamiliar with the word Shiva, it is a week long mourning period observed by first degree relatives. … Read entire article »

The Kindness Club: Week 22 Prompt

The Kindness Club: Week 22 Prompt

It’s week 22 of the Kindness Club. (Yes, it’s a day late again I know, but be kind. I am tired.) Thanks to all of you who have been reading and joining in on the weekly kindness prompts even if you are not posting or commenting. Last week’s Kindness Club prompt was to write a letter (not an email) to someone you appreciate and whose presence you are grateful for in your life. Letting someone … Read entire article »

Let The People You Appreciate Know What They Mean To You

Let The People You Appreciate Know What They Mean To You

This is my Kindness Club Prompt follow up post. I normally put a kindness prompt up on Tuesday and on Sunday I write a blog about a “lesson learned” using the previous week’s kindness prompt. This week I am three days late with this post because it has been an emotionally tough week. On Sunday evening, the father of a good friend of mine passed away suddenly. He had many health issues but even so, the circumstance … Read entire article »

The End Is Not The End

It’s sudden it can’t be, is it the end? __ Are you sure? It can’t be true, do something it just can’t end. __ The shock the denial lots of tears no dry eyes. __ Expected yet unexpected a life shattering shock. __ Time ticks slowly willing you to rewind, the hands of the clock to take you back in time. __ Sadness and grief gripping your heart, to press restart is all that you want. __ It hurts it aches it’s traumatic it’s painful yet for the years of excellence you are grateful. __ You breathe, you try to think, try to take stock, wishing you could relieve yourself of the image engraved, in your mind and heart. __ A blink of an eye ushers in the end, the end of a long shared life, accompanied by heart wrenching pain, sharp as a knife. __ Movement and activity bustling all around stark contrast to the peace and stillness he has now found. __ It is the end to a moment. He has left this earth surrounded by family whom he loved and by whom, he was adored. __ His soul’s journey was graced although he left in haste for he … Read entire article »

Make Sure You Have “Go To” Outfit In Your Closet

Make Sure You Have “Go To” Outfit In Your Closet

As those who read this blog know, my grandmother’s sister passed away five days ago. I had also written about certain aspects of Jewish burial but I had not written about Kriya. Kriya literally means ripping. The spouse, siblings, children and parents of the deceased rip their shirt before the burial and say a blessing proclaiming that God is a true judge. Children have their shirt ripped on the left side (on the side of the … Read entire article »

The Kindness Club: Week 21 Prompt

The Kindness Club: Week 21 Prompt

The Jewish High Holidays start tomorrow night. (So I will be missing for a few days.) The month leading up to the High Holidays are days that are meant for repentance, for thinking what wrongs you have done, for making amends and for mapping out for yourself where you want to change. For me one of the aspects I like focusing upon aside from charity is being grateful and thankful. Grateful and thankful for everything in your … Read entire article »

Get Ahead When You Let Someone Get Ahead

Get Ahead When You Let Someone Get Ahead

There are some simple and free things in life that can leave you with a really good feeling. One of those things is to let someone go ahead of you when you are waiting in line. It can be any line, anywhere. I don’t know about you, but I know that there are many times that I have been in a rush or have been stuck behind someone with a full cart when I only have … Read entire article »

Even If You Have Time, When Your Mind Is Occupied, It’s Hard To Get Things Done

Even If You Have Time, When Your Mind Is Occupied, It’s Hard To Get Things Done

Worrying, or actually stopping to worry, is one of the challenges in my life that I am working hard at. I truly believe that you gain nothing from worrying. When you worry, you spend time and waste energy on things that may or may not actually happen. So I have found myself the past few days pondering whether or not I was worrying about things, preoccupied with things or whether I was being realistic and anticipating … Read entire article »

“Slowly Fading”

What can you say when time has marked it’s stay? - The years have come and gone life’s pains have left its stains. - Your glaring eyes see betrayal. Your life you view as disdainful. - You feel sorry for yourself so sorry that you barely let in the love around you the innocent love of children surround you. - Your memory drifting your sanity loosely gripping your body aching the emotions breaking. - Scary for you your behavior’s erratic even scarier for others, your actions too dramatic. - Lucid one moment the next confused the love and the help angrily refused. - In a blink of an eye you forget where you are you forget your loved ones your anger breaks my heart. - Simply daily activities are becoming a strain bathing and washing are grounds for quarreling. - And if I am honest I worry also about me what kind of burden will your decline put on me. - The years have flown by the candle is fading for the end of your years you are impatiently waiting. - It pains me to see you overlooking … Read entire article »

The Only One You Are Up Against Is Yourself

The Only One You Are Up Against Is Yourself

Once again I decided that my original title needed revising, mostly because it was stated from a negative. I started out with “Don’t Judge Yourself Against Others and Their Successes”. What I wanted to say is that we need to look inside ourselves for positive affirmation. In short, the lesson is to learn to stop comparing yourself to others. It seems to be human nature to constantly compare yourself to other people. We don’t live in a … Read entire article »
